*update*: Facebook has responded this Princeton research in quite a great way. Read the story here, this chart gives a clue:

Via Time I found a different way of looking at social media, as a contagious, viral disease. But the Princeton researchers, based on their model, think that the end is probably near. Facebook users will lose interest in Facebook over time as their peers lose interest — if the model is correct. ”Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological models,”  the researchers.
